A tragic helicopter crash in the Indian state of Uttarakhand has claimed the lives of seven people, including a pilot and a two-year-old child. The aircraft, operated by Aryan Aviation, was en route from the sacred Kedarnath temple to Guptkashi, both key stops on the revered Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage. The crash occurred early Sunday morning near Gaurikund, a well-known stopover along the mountainous route.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the Bell 407 helicopter took off shortly after 5:15 AM local time but lost contact soon after. A rescue operation was immediately launched, and the bodies of all on board have been recovered. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will lead the formal probe into the cause of the crash.
Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, called the incident “very sad news” in a statement posted on X. He confirmed that the State Disaster Response Force and other rescue units were dispatched swiftly and have completed relief operations. The Chief Minister has ordered a thorough investigation and vowed strict action against any negligence uncovered during the probe.
In the wake of the crash, all helicopter services along the Char Dham Yatra route have been suspended until at least Monday. Authorities will review pilot qualifications, safety standards, and flight operations before services are allowed to resume. A new Standard Operating Procedure will also be implemented to improve coordination and ensure safer flights, with a command center being set up in Dehradun.
Officials noted this marks the second helicopter crash in the region in less than two months, along with three emergency landings. The sharp increase in air traffic due to high pilgrimage turnout has raised concerns over aviation safety in the treacherous Himalayan terrain. Authorities have pledged to assist the victims’ families and facilitate the return of their remains to their home states.
