Crime continues to rattle Mississauga and Brampton, as Peel Regional Police report a surge in break-and-enter incidents across both cities. Over the past 30 days alone, 178 such crimes have been recorded, with no area of Peel Region spared from the wave of theft and property damage.

Peel Police crime data shows that downtown Brampton has emerged as a particular hotspot, with 11 break-and-enter cases reported in the area within the last month. Since the start of the year, Peel Region has seen a total of 840 break-ins, many of which have targeted businesses and residences in Brampton’s core. Mississauga has also faced its share of incidents, especially along Dundas Street West and Lakeshore Road in Port Credit, where commercial properties have been frequent targets.

Residential properties have not been immune to these crimes, with Peel Police warning that certain types of homes are at higher risk. According to police, homes located on corner lots, those backing onto parks or open spaces, and properties that appear unmaintained or vacant are more likely to attract criminals looking for easy opportunities.

“Residential break-ins are typically crimes of opportunity,” Peel Police explained. “Burglars usually target properties that offer them the best chance to break in and escape unnoticed.” To help residents safeguard their homes, Peel Police recommend keeping hedges and shrubs trimmed to ensure clear visibility of all doors and windows, always securing garage and screen doors even when at home, and fostering strong community ties with neighbors.

They also advise adding secondary locks to windows and sliding doors as an extra layer of protection. Peel Police continue to monitor trends via their online crime map, which highlights the areas most affected by break-and-enters between April 11 and May 11, offering residents a tool to stay informed and vigilant.
