As Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face another disappointing IPL season, finishing likely in the bottom two for the second consecutive year, questions are mounting over the team’s direction and MS Dhoni’s continued presence on the field. With Ruturaj Gaikwad sidelined due to injury, Dhoni once again stepped in to lead the squad, but many fans and pundits wonder if the legendary captain has overstayed his time as a player.

However, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has offered a strong defense of Dhoni, stating that the veteran wicket-keeper makes decisions based solely on what’s best for the franchise. “Any player makes decisions not so much for himself, but for what is likely to be good for the team. Whatever decision MSD made about playing this season would have been based solely on what’s best for CSK,” Gavaskar told Sports Today. He added that any future decisions Dhoni makes will also prioritize the team’s needs over personal ambition.

While Dhoni’s leadership and legacy continue to command respect, CSK’s on-field woes are more deeply rooted, according to Gavaskar. He pointed to a flawed auction strategy and a lackluster scouting system as key issues. “They need to get their auction strategy right. I’m not too sure their scouting team is as effective as other franchises,” he said.

Gavaskar warned against over-reliance on domestic leagues such as the Jharkhand or UP T20 circuits, where performances don’t always translate to IPL success. “Many players who shine in smaller leagues often struggle against top-tier bowling. Scouts should focus on identifying quality bowlers who can make a real difference at the IPL level,” he added.

In his view, CSK’s biggest priority should be revamping their bowling unit. A stronger attack, Gavaskar believes, is essential to consistently restrict opponents and secure victories.

As CSK prepares for a much-needed overhaul, Gavaskar’s blunt assessment offers a blueprint for rebuilding: thoughtful talent acquisition, sharper scouting, and a renewed focus on bowling depth, all while trusting Dhoni to do what’s best for the team’s future.
