In a stunning turn of events, Switzerland emerged victorious over Canada in a penalty shootout, securing a 3-2 win and a spot in the men’s ice hockey world championship final against Czechia. The game ended in a deadlock of 2-2 after regulation time, with neither team managing to score in the 10-minute overtime period.

Sven Andrighetto’s shootout goal proved decisive, with Kevin Fiala playing a pivotal role with a goal, an assist, and another goal in the shootout. Nino Niederreiter also contributed a goal for Switzerland, while goaltender Leonardo Genoni made an impressive 42 saves.

Canada fought back valiantly, with captain John Tavares netting the game-tying goal late in the third period, assisted by Connor Bedard. Despite their efforts, Canada was forced to settle for the bronze-medal game against Sweden.

The Swiss took an early lead with goals from Fiala and Niederreiter in the first period, outshooting Canada 17-8. Brandon Tanev narrowed the gap for Canada in the second period, but it was Tavares’ late equalizer that forced the game into overtime.

In the other semifinal, Czechia secured a spot in the final by defeating Sweden 7-3. Dominik Kubalik and Lukas Sedlak led the Czech offense with two goals each, supported by Martin Necas’ four-point performance. Despite Sweden’s efforts, including goals from Marcus Johansson, Marcus Pettersson, and Joel Eriksson, they were unable to overcome the Czechs’ strong play.

The stage is set for an exciting final showdown between Switzerland and Czechia, with both teams vying for the championship title.
