Tesla is accelerating its push into artificial intelligence inside its vehicles, even as it enters a fresh legal battle with regulators in California. The company is continuing to integrate the Grok chatbot, developed by Elon Musk’s xAI venture, into its vehicle software. At the same time, it has filed suit against the California Department of Motor Vehicles over claims tied to the marketing and naming of its driver assistance systems.

Tesla Takes Legal Action Over Autopilot Naming Dispute

Tesla recently removed the term Autopilot from portions of its consumer website following pressure from California regulators. The DMV had argued that the branding of Autopilot and Full Self Driving could mislead customers into believing the vehicles were fully autonomous. In response, Tesla renamed its system to Full Self Driving Supervised and adjusted related marketing language to comply with state requirements. These changes reportedly helped the company avoid a potential temporary suspension of sales and manufacturing activity in California.

Despite those adjustments, Tesla has now filed a lawsuit against the state agency. According to reporting from CNBC, the automaker claims it was wrongly labeled as engaging in false advertising, even after agreeing to modify its terminology. Tesla maintains that it provides extensive disclaimers outlining the system’s limitations and emphasizing driver responsibility. The company also continues to offer Full Self Driving Supervised as a subscription service for customers who want advanced driver assistance features.

The legal move comes at a sensitive time. Tesla recently announced that production of its fully autonomous Cybercab is underway. Any regulatory scrutiny surrounding automated driving claims could affect public perception as Tesla works to advance its autonomous ambitions.

Grok AI Gains New In Car Powers

While the courtroom battle unfolds, Tesla is steadily expanding the capabilities of Grok inside its vehicles. Recent software updates have strengthened natural language voice controls, allowing drivers to add waypoints, adjust routes, and manage navigation through conversational commands rather than navigating through multiple menus.

Elon Musk has now indicated that further enhancements are on the way. In a brief post on X, he stated that expanded voice control over automated parking functions is coming soon. This would allow drivers to verbally instruct their vehicle where and how to park, rather than relying solely on preset self parking routines.

Although specific timelines have not been announced, the feature is widely expected to arrive in a future software update. If successfully implemented, it could significantly improve the hands free parking experience and showcase how AI driven interfaces may redefine how drivers interact with their vehicles. As Tesla pushes forward with AI integration and autonomous technology, both its software advancements and regulatory challenges are shaping the next chapter of the company’s evolution.
