The Ontario Schools Cricket Association (OSCA) is offering an exciting creative competition for Ontario elementary and secondary school students: an essay contest entitled “The Crown, Cricket, and Canada.”
Through this essay contest, OSCA aims to touch on all aspects of wellness (physical, mental, and social); inviting students to exercise their academic skills while also becoming more aware of sport and physical activity.
This contest, partly funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage and supported by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, invites students to write an essay exploring cricket’s storied history and royal connections in Canada. This contest is particularly timely as the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II has led to heightened interest in the history and relationship as we commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign and recognize the royal patronage of cricket in Canada. The contest is a unique opportunity for students to explore these topics while also learning more about the game of cricket. Those who submit a top essay will receive official recognition from the Premier of Ontario, and prize money of $3,000 will be awarded to the winner(s).
OSCA has produced a short video to provide contest participants with background information highlighting the historic Rideau Hall cricket pitch built in 1865 by Canada’s first Governor General Lord Monck at the Governor General’s residence in Ottawa.
