Bottled water may seem like a bland topic—until you actually try comparing them. From mineral content to mouthfeel and aftertaste, the differences are more noticeable than you’d expect. We had a panel of everyday testers sample some of the most popular bottled water brands, blindly ranked without knowing which bottle was which. Here’s the verdict, from best to worst.
1. Evian
Straight from the French Alps, Evian delivers a smooth and elegant experience. It’s naturally filtered through glacial rocks over 15 years and arrives rich in minerals and electrolytes. The taste is clean and crisp, with just enough minerality to feel nourishing. The group agreed it was sophisticated and refreshing without being overpowering.
2. Voss
Voss, sourced from an artesian well in Norway, lives up to its premium image. It has a bold, almost gravelly character that made it stand out. One tester called it the “Jack Palance of water”—rugged, interesting, and memorable. This is the kind of water you’d expect to find in a luxury hotel room, and it lives up to the expectation.
3. Nestlé Pure Life
Despite its industrial-sounding name, Nestlé Pure Life surprised our tasters with a balanced, neutral profile. The purification and re-mineralization process results in a clean flavor that’s easy to drink. No aftertaste, no distractions—just simple, satisfying hydration.
4. Fiji Natural Artesian Water
Coming from the island of Viti Levu, Fiji water has a distinct, lab-like quality thanks to natural volcanic filtration. It’s smooth, consistent, and slightly mineral-rich without feeling heavy. Described as “crafted by a perfectionist,” this one impressed those who prefer their water pristine and pure.
5. smartwater
Glacéau’s vapor-distilled water with added electrolytes feels light and refreshing, but didn’t win over everyone. The taste was described as filtered to the point of artificiality, like water that’s been through a Brita one too many times. Still, it’s a decent option for those who want something modern and crisp.
6. Dasani
Coca-Cola’s bottled water offering left tasters divided. Infused with magnesium sulfate and potassium chloride, it had a buoyant mouthfeel and a clean but slightly fruity edge. Some found it pleasant, while others said it reminded them of water from an old Brita filter. Not bad, but far from the top.
7. Aquafina
Purified through a seven-step process, Aquafina starts off strong but leaves a heavy aftertaste. One tester called it “the cabernet of water”—bold and oddly full-bodied. That’s not exactly a compliment for something meant to feel light and neutral. It’s drinkable, but not the most refreshing.
8. Kirkland Signature Bottled Water
Costco’s value brand brings quantity and convenience, but little else. It tasted flat and slightly metallic, with no noticeable mineral content or freshness. Ideal for bulk use or keeping in the trunk of your car, but it fell far behind the competition in taste and texture.
