As a result of a leadership challenge that shook the Alberta United Conservative Party, Premier Jason Kenney stepped down.
After receiving 51.4% of the vote, Kenney addressed his party, acknowledging he could not remain at the helm.
In a short speech, Kenney said that 51 percent of the vote passes the constitutional majority threshold, but “it is not adequate support for continuing as leader.”.
“I have informed the president of the party of my intention to step down.”
“I’m sorry, but friends, I truly believe that we need to move forward united,” said Kenney. “We need to put the past behind us.”
