Tom Cruise is preparing to take flight once again as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, with Paramount Pictures confirming during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas that a third installment in the blockbuster Top Gun franchise is moving forward.
Longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer will return to oversee the project, continuing his role in shaping the series across decades. Development of the next chapter has been underway since early reports surfaced in 2024, with screenwriter Ehren Kruger again contributing to the story after helping craft the script for Top Gun: Maverick.
The 2022 sequel proved to be one of the most successful theatrical releases in recent years, generating approximately $1.5 billion worldwide from a production budget of about $170 million. Its success revived global enthusiasm for the aviation drama franchise and introduced a younger generation of pilots alongside Maverick’s return to elite training operations.
The earlier film followed Cruise’s character decades after the events of Top Gun, portraying him as an instructor mentoring rising aviators including Rooster, played by Miles Teller. The sequel also featured a strong supporting cast including Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly and Ed Harris.
The upcoming sequel’s director has not yet been confirmed. Joe Kosinski directed Top Gun: Maverick, while the original 1986 classic was helmed by Tony Scott. With Cruise returning and production momentum building, expectations are already high for the next chapter in one of Hollywood’s most enduring action franchises.
