Toronto General Hospital has been ranked among the very best medical institutions in the world, earning the second spot in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 list. The hospital, which is part of the University Health Network, achieved the highest ranking ever secured by a Canadian hospital in the annual global survey.
The recognition places Toronto General Hospital at the forefront of international health care excellence. Dr. Kevin Smith, president and CEO of the University Health Network, said the honour reflects the organization’s longstanding commitment to integrating patient care, research and education. He described the ranking as validation of the network’s focus on innovation and discovery in service of patients.
Smith added that while the achievement is a source of pride for Ontario and Canada, it also underscores the importance of continued investment in health research and scientific advancement. He emphasized that sustained support is essential to ensure Canada remains a global leader in shaping the future of medicine and health care delivery.
Other hospitals within the University Health Network also received recognition. Toronto Western Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre were included in Newsweek’s list of the world’s top 250 hospitals. Princess Margaret Cancer Centre further distinguished itself by earning a place among the top 10 specialized hospitals globally in cancer care.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford praised the accomplishment, calling it a testament to the strength of Ontario’s health care system. In a statement, the University Health Network credited the achievement to support from provincial and federal governments, affiliated foundations and donors. Newsweek’s annual rankings evaluate thousands of hospitals across 32 countries using international surveys of medical professionals and patients along with performance and quality metrics.
