TORONTO – The widow of Alan Kats, the gunman in the recent Toronto office shooting, says her husband was “pushed to the edge” after the couple allegedly fell victim to a mortgage fraud scam, losing their life savings.

Alisa Pogorelovsky described her husband as a “humble man” who was deeply affected by the alleged scam, which left their family financially devastated. The couple, married for over nine years with two children, saw their “amazing” life change drastically after the loss.

Kats, 46, shot and killed Arash Missaghi and Samira Yousefi in a North York office building before dying at the scene. The shooting was linked to a dispute over an alleged mortgage fraud that had cost Kats and Pogorelovsky $1.28 million and their family home.

Pogorelovsky shared that Kats had become unable to work, sleep, or eat due to the stress of the financial loss. She revealed a note Kats left, blaming Missaghi and Yousefi for his actions and urging authorities to stop the “criminals.”

The couple had filed a lawsuit accusing Missaghi and Yousefi of operating a syndicated mortgage fraud through Saarad Investments Inc. Despite some assets being frozen by the court, most of the defendants remained unaffected.

The tragic event has left Pogorelovsky struggling to make ends meet, resorting to selling her artwork and relying on a GoFundMe page. The police investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.
