Nancy Pelosi, the only female speaker in history, is nearing the end of her current tenure.
The only woman to hold the office of Speaker of the U.S. House, Nancy Pelosi, made her resignation from party leadership official on Thursday.
Following the announcement on Wednesday that the Republicans would take back control of the House, Pelosi, the most influential Democrat in Congress for the previous generation, is in the closing weeks of her most recent term as Speaker.
She received a standing ovation when she entered the chamber on Thursday before declaring that she will not run for re-election to a leadership position in the upcoming Democratic caucus.
With 84% of the vote, as per the latest tally, Pelosi kept her own seat in San Francisco’s 11th District. Pelosi has travelled throughout the last year to Kyiv and other locations in Europe for summits connected to the Ukraine war, as well as to many Asian nations and the present COP27 climate meeting in Egypt, in addition to collecting money for midterm candidates.

On October 28, when Pelosi was in Washington, D.C., her husband Paul was reportedly attacked at their San Francisco home by a Canadian who had previously overstayed his U.S. visa. This incident became an unanticipated new component in Pelosi’s decision.
In her first interview since the incident, Pelosi told CNN that “what transpired over the past week or two will have an impact on my choice.” Paul Pelosi, whom she referred to as her “pillar of strength,” is already home from the hospital, but his rehabilitation will be challenging.
Pelosi held the position of Speaker from 2007 to 2011 and since 2019. As Speaker in 2010, she had a key role in passing the Affordable Care Act, possibly the most consequential piece of modern U.S. legislation.
She was particularly prominent throughout Donald Trump’s administration, ignoring his many verbal assaults while inspiring the House to impeach the 45th president twice, a record.
Voices chanting for Pelosi may be heard in the hallways during the fatal Jan. 6, 2021 riot in which a mob in opposition to Trump’s unsuccessful re-election attempt entered the Capitol. Pelosi was elsewhere on the premises when several people broke into her office and stole things, which led to criminal proceedings.
It is also reported that the attacker at her San Francisco home on October 28 intended to confront her.
