Members of Winnipeg’s Punjabi community rejoiced over the weekend as the annual cultural extravaganza, Raunak Teeyan Di, returned to the Maples. Organized by women, for women, the event was a vibrant showcase of tradition, featuring dance, singing, bhangra, and Giddha.
“It is really important because through celebrations we all come together,” remarked organizer Sandeep Bhatti. “Through celebrations, we just make ourselves more joyful, we dance.”
More than just a day of revelry, the festival served as an educational platform, imparting the significance of culture to younger attendees. “You are alive just because of your culture,” emphasized Bhatti. “It’s very important for every person just to keep connected to its roots and its culture.”
What began in 2018 as a vision by Bhatti and fellow community members to create an event “for the ladies, by the ladies,” has blossomed into a cherished tradition. With the organizing team expanding from three to four members this year, the festival’s growth is evident.
Naman Mangat, formerly a sponsor and now an organizer, expressed her delight in joining the team. “I’m glad that I’m part of the team now,” she shared on CBC Manitoba’s Weekend Morning Show with host Nadia Kidwai.
The inclusive event, welcoming women from all communities, boasted a turnout of over 1,500 attendees. From captivating performances by local singers and dancers to the pulsating beats of the DJ, the festivities commenced at 1 p.m., promising a day filled with cultural richness and jubilation.
