A woman and her two young children are missing after attempting to cross illegally into Canada near the Quebec-New York border, according to the RCMP. Authorities say the family was part of a larger group that tried to enter the country near the rural municipality of Godmanchester, Quebec, situated roughly 65 kilometres southwest of Montreal.
RCMP officers apprehended three other individuals from the group on Wednesday night—two men and a woman—after they crossed the border illegally. Following their arrest, police learned during interviews that another woman and two children had become separated and were unaccounted for in the surrounding wooded area.
Search efforts began shortly after midnight and have intensified with support from a helicopter, a police tracking dog, and members of the Sûreté du Québec, the provincial police force. Authorities are combing the dense forest along the border in hopes of locating the missing individuals.
The incident highlights a growing trend of asylum seekers attempting to enter Canada outside of official ports of entry, particularly since U.S. President Donald Trump returned to office earlier this year. Roxham Road, a well-known unofficial crossing nearby, has become a focal point for such attempts due to its accessibility from New York State.
Officials have not yet confirmed the identities or nationalities of the missing individuals. The RCMP continues to monitor the area and urges anyone with information to come forward as the search remains underway.
