(NC) From piles of potatoes to bushels of tomatoes, grocery stores these days seem like they have limitless options to choose from.
But how do you know which brand of food is the best for your family and recipe?
Take for example the egg, an affordable and versatile addition to any meal, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. Though there are many kinds of eggs to choose from at your local grocery story, these food considerations are good to keep in mind the next time you shop:
Know where your eggs come from.
It can be daunting not knowing exactly where your food is from.
But rest assured, because all eggs produced by Canadian egg farmers are fresh, local and high-quality, labelled with a maple leaf Grade “A” symbol on the carton, which is given only to products that pass the standards of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Many cartons also feature a “Product of Canada” label that you can’t miss.
Understand that Canadian egg farmers care for their hens.
The health and welfare of their hens is a top priority for our farmers.
All regulated egg farmers follow rigorous animal welfare and food safety standards, which include inspections and audits, to uphold the health and well-being of the hens under their care.
Make sustainability a top priority.
Canada’s egg industry has reduced its environmental impact over the past 50 years and continues to make improvements. Today, domestic egg production emits 68 per cent less greenhouse gases, uses 69 per cent less water, 81 per cent less land and 41 per cent less energy than it did in the 1980s.
In turn the system of supply management — which allows egg farmers to produce the right amount of eggs to meet demand — provides stability, so that egg farmers can afford to invest in new technologies to make their future farms even more sustainable.
