In the past week, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) took a significant step by conducting its inaugural Express Entry category-based draw for transport occupations. This move reflects Canada’s commitment to addressing critical labor market shortages and gaps.
Reason for Choosing Transport Occupations as an Express Entry Category: The six categories for Express Entry category-based selection were carefully chosen based on industries facing substantial labor shortages in the Canadian market. The decision involved consultations with various stakeholders, and the transport sector emerged as one with the most pressing needs, according to approximately 16% of respondents.
Eligible Occupations in the Transport Category: The Transport category in Express Entry includes ten eligible occupations, such as aircraft assemblers, transport truck drivers, and air traffic controllers. These roles were identified as vital to Canada’s workforce due to their significant demand.
Ways to Immigrate to Canada as a Transport Worker:
- Standard Express Entry Draw: Transport workers can also immigrate to Canada through standard Express Entry draws. These draws prioritize candidates’ Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores over specific employment experience. Candidates can apply for Canadian immigration through the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
- Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and More: Transport workers have additional immigration options through Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP), and the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP). These programs enable provinces and territories to select skilled workers to address local labor market gaps.
- Other Federal and Provincial Options: The AIP focuses on attracting immigrants to Atlantic Canada, offering assistance to both employers and newcomers. The RNIP is a community-driven initiative involving 11 participating communities across Canada. Quebec, as a predominantly French-speaking region, also provides various immigration pathways for transport workers, including the Regular Skilled Workers Program (QSWP) and the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ).
By exploring these immigration avenues, transport workers can embark on a journey to Canada, contributing to the country’s workforce and enjoying the opportunities it offers.
