In a tragic incident that unfolded in Canada, a man from Punjab, India, reportedly stabbed his wife to death just a week after their arrival in the country. The accused, identified as Jagpreet Singh, allegedly confessed to the crime during a video call with his mother in Ludhiana, informing her that he had killed his wife.
Here’s what is known about the incident:
The shocking event occurred on March 15, where 50-year-old Jagpreet Singh, hailing from Ludhiana, allegedly stabbed his wife, Balwinder Kaur, 41, in their residence in Abbotsford, Canada. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to an assault incident and found Kaur with life-threatening stab wounds. Despite attempts to save her, Kaur succumbed to her injuries shortly after being taken to the hospital.
Jagpreet Singh was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder on March 16.
According to reports, Singh contacted his mother in Ludhiana via video call and admitted to killing his wife, stating, “I have put her to sleep forever.” Allegations have surfaced suggesting that Singh had been fixated on reaching Canada and had pressured Kaur to expedite their travel arrangements.
The couple reportedly had ongoing arguments regarding finances, particularly after Singh became unemployed, adding strain to their relationship.
Singh and Kaur, married in 2000, have two children—a 22-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old son. Their daughter had been studying in Canada on a study visa, and Kaur had traveled there to care for her due to health issues. However, tensions escalated soon after Kaur’s arrival in Canada, with Singh allegedly harassing her.
Contrary to these allegations, Singh’s brother Jaspreet has refuted claims of discord in their relationship, asserting that they were a “happy couple” and had returned from shopping just hours before the tragic incident.
The incident has sent shockwaves through both the local and Indian communities, highlighting the gravity of domestic violence and its devastating consequences.
