A recent Ipsos poll reveals that 70% of Canadians agree with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s assertion that Canada is “broken.” Conducted exclusively for Global News, the poll highlights a growing sense of pessimism, particularly among younger Canadians aged 18 to 34, with 78% expressing the need for significant changes in the country.
Ipsos Public Affairs CEO Darrell Bricker notes that these feelings reflect broader frustrations with institutions rather than the nation itself. The survey indicates a significant shift in political sentiment, with disillusioned millennials increasingly supporting Poilievre, despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s efforts to address “generational fairness.”
Poilievre’s popularity is reflected in the Conservatives’ recent victory in the Toronto-St. Paul’s byelection, a traditionally Liberal stronghold. This development has intensified scrutiny of Trudeau’s leadership, with nearly seven in 10 Canadians suggesting it’s time for him to resign.
Additionally, the poll indicates a decline in national pride and enthusiasm for Canada Day celebrations. Thirty-two percent of respondents are less likely to attend events, and 28% are less inclined to display the Canadian flag compared to five years ago.
Bricker warns that while Poilievre’s critique resonates with many, addressing the underlying issues will be a significant challenge for any political leader.
