With election rumors swirling, the Liberal Party has unveiled its new leadership team for the upcoming federal campaign. On Sunday, the party announced that Andrew Bevan will serve as the national campaign director, while Marjorie Michel will take on the role of deputy campaign director.
Bevan, a seasoned political strategist, previously worked as chief of staff for former federal Liberal leader Stéphane Dion and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. Most recently, he was chief of staff to Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and a senior adviser to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Bevan is replacing Jeremy Broadhurst, who stepped down in September due to the intense pressures of the job.
Michel, a veteran organizer with strong connections in Quebec, has experience managing campaign operations during the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. She is currently Trudeau’s deputy chief of staff.
The announcement follows a week of tension within the Liberal caucus, with some MPs expressing dissatisfaction over Trudeau’s absence at a national caucus meeting due to his trip to Laos for an international summit.
While Canada’s next federal election is scheduled for October 2025, the breakdown of the NDP-Liberal supply and confidence agreement has led to uncertainty. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet is pushing the government to pass key legislation, threatening to collaborate with other parties to bring down the Liberal minority government if his demands are not met.
Despite the pressures, Trudeau has indicated that an election is likely next year but not before fall 2025.
