An Ontario man was duped out of $1,500 after applying for Nexus cards through a misleading social media advertisement. The advertisement promised a fast-tracked application process for the Nexus card, which facilitates quicker travel between Canada and the U.S. The man paid the hefty sum for himself and his wife over a year ago but has yet to receive the cards. Further, the company has now demanded additional payments.
The victim, who chose to remain anonymous due to privacy concerns, expressed regret over not researching the company more thoroughly. “I should have done a little more research on this one,” he lamented after encountering radio silence from the company following multiple attempts to contact them.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has confirmed that it does not solicit payments for application fees via social media advertisements and warned against scams that impersonate government services to steal personal and financial information. The CBSA also noted that using third-party services could delay or even prevent the issuance of a Nexus card.
To apply for a Nexus card, the CBSA advises using the official Government of Canada website, which provides accurate information and guidance on the application process without additional fees.
