Brampton is turning 50 and to celebrate the city is selecting 50 interdisciplinary artworks from Brampton based artists and musicians.
Ttell your story within the story of Brampton’s past, present and future and have your work featured on the 24′ LED screen in Garden Square! The Brampton Arts Organization (BAO) and Garden Square Brampton are thrilled to offer the unique opportunity for up to 50 emerging and mid-career artists, musicians, creatives, or arts collectives to have their work featured on the screen in Garden Square for select weeks from June to December, 2024.
Every two weeks, a group of artists will have their work featured daily with content running continuously from 11am-12pm and 5-6pm (timing subject to change), with additional features across the Garden Square, BAO and City social media channels and, potentially, recreation screens across the city.
The City is seeking to showcase a collection of various artistic styles, genres and practices of Brampton artists. As Brampton turns 50, we invite you to reflect on your practice and where you imagine it might take you. For examples of what is imagined the presentation will look like, please see below:
Submissions can include but are not limited to:
- Still images: Digital art, Photography, Illustrations, Paintings
- Moving images (up to 3 minutes): Theatre, Video Art, Short Animations, Music Videos
- Physical works: Beading, Weaving, Clothing, etc.
- If selected, artists with physical works will have the opportunity to have their works professionally photographed for display on the Screen.
Artists are invited to explore their artistic practice in their application, and their connection to Brampton. Questions to consider include:
- How has Brampton changed and how has Brampton changed you?
- What would you like Brampton to look like 50 years from now? 500 years from now?
- What does it mean to be from Brampton, this place we call home?
- Telling your story in Brampton’s past, present and future
T/he City welcomes submissions across a variety of themes and ideas. This unique opportunity is extended across all mediums and genres and strives to provide a collection of interdisciplinary artists, musicians, creatives, or arts collectives. Emerging and mid-career artists are encouraged to apply.
Garden Square is a public square located at the Four Corners in Downtown Brampton (intersection of Queen and Main). Selected artworks will be displayed in a public space and may be seen by families and small children. The selection panel will, at its discretion, determine if artworks are suitable for these audiences.
Submission Parameters
- Artwork can be new or recent original work and include any medium or genre in a digital format according to the specifications detailed below. Abstract and non-representational works are welcomed and encouraged.
- If selected, artists with physical visual artwork will have the option to have their works professionally photographed for display on the Screen.
- Artists may submit up to 3 artworks for consideration but will not be selected more than once.

Resolution: Minimum 300 dpi in full size
Image Dimensions: For 16×9 format, 1920px x 1080px resolution or greater, will also accept 1080 x 1920, for 1×1 format, 1200 x 1200
File Type: Artwork to be sent in a .tiff, .ai, .psd, or .jpg format.
Video
Video works to be sent in high resolution MP4 format and a maximum of 3 minutes in length. See Submission Guidelines below for more details. Audio is allowed and encouraged.
PSAs or advertising materials will not be considered.
Content requirements
Content should be geared to presentation within a highly visible public space that is accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. Content with explicit use of alcohol, smoking, illegal drugs, horror, offensive language, nudity, explicit sexual activity and/or violence will not be considered.
Artist Fee
Artists selected for this opportunity will be paid a one-time Artist Fee of $350.00 Canadian Dollars (+HST if applicable) to:
- Have your work presented on the Garden Square LED screen for a period of 2 weeks and featured across the social media and websites of Garden Square Brampton, BAO, and the City,
- Promote your participation in the exhibition online and on social media by tagging @gardensquarebrampton @baobrampton and #PIXELGardenSquare on each post related to the project.
This Artist Fee includes any necessary costs or materials, and no further compensation will be made to the artist for costs associated with participating in the project.
Selection Process and Criteria
This Call to Artists welcomes applications on an ongoing basis until February 25, 11:59 PM. Submissions will be evaluated by BAO staff and local artists (the “Selection Panel”) according to the following criteria:
- The artwork’s suitability to the exhibition theme and presentation method.
- Artwork must not have been previously shown or submitted to a past PIXEL exhibition.
- Priority is given to artists residing in Brampton; however, consideration will also be given to artists outside of Brampton whose work has been influenced by Brampton and their connection to the city.
- The Selection Panel will prioritize applicants who, self-identify as belonging to one (or more) of the following groups or intersecting marginalized identities: Indigenous, Persons of Colour, Deaf Persons, Persons with Disabilities, Newcomers and Persons Living with Mental Illness, 2SLGBTQIAP. We strongly encourage applications from these communities and will endeavour to accommodate applicants with a disability during our process per the Ontario Human Rights Code guidelines and other applicable legislation. The Corporation of the City of Brampton (the “City”) reserves the right to select and retain the artist(s) whose works are deemed most appropriate for the project at its sole discretion. The City, at its sole discretion, may request clarifications or additional information, as deemed necessary to evaluate the submissions. Artists are expected to reply to staff communication within three business days. The City reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to determine the number of selected artworks. The City reserves the right to not proceed with awarding an honorarium if the artist substantially departs from the terms outlined in this call. Additionally, substantial departure includes, but is not limited to lewd, inciting violence with respect to others or against the City or City property, making derogatory remarks about the City or its citizens.
