A G2 driver was recently spotted racing past a police cruiser at an alarming speed of 180 km/h on Highway 407, prompting a stern reminder from law enforcement that the rules of the road apply to all motorists, regardless of the highway they’re on.
In a video shared on social media by York Regional Police (YRP), an officer from the Road Safety Bureau is seen pulling over the young driver, who was reportedly weaving through traffic in a zone with a speed limit of 100 km/h. The officer informs the driver that their reckless behavior constitutes stunt driving, as they were driving a staggering 80 kilometers over the limit.
Constable Jeff Poole of YRP’s Road Safety Bureau can be heard addressing the driver, expressing disbelief at their decision to travel at such an excessive speed. He emphasizes the danger posed by stunt driving, noting that it is an arrestable offense. While the officer opts not to arrest the driver, they face severe consequences, including a suspended license and a 14-day impoundment of their vehicle.
Poole underscores the gravity of the situation, highlighting the potential for a catastrophic accident at such high speeds, particularly if the driver were to lose control and collide with another vehicle.
Highway 407, although primarily patrolled by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), allows officers from other jurisdictions, such as YRP, to enforce traffic laws if they witness violations. YRP’s proactive approach to traffic enforcement is evidenced by the significant number of stunt driving charges laid in 2023, totaling 1,108.
In a statement, YRP emphasized the severity of the consequences for reckless driving, urging motorists to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution on the roads. The force emphasized that the toll for stunt driving offenses far exceeds the financial cost of using the highway, serving as a stark reminder for drivers to prioritize safety and obey traffic laws.
