Canadian auto parts supplier Magna International has introduced cutting-edge reconfigurable swiveling seats, promising enhanced interior flexibility and a range of configurations for vehicles. Known for its collaboration with General Motors, Magna’s latest innovation could soon be seen in GM vehicles.
Kai Zhao, Magna’s director of engineering, explained to Automotive News that the reconfigurable seats can transform vehicle interiors, offering new possibilities for space utilization. This innovation allows for more comfort during EV charging times or additional cargo space for transporting large items.
The seats feature long rails, up to six feet in length, enabling significant forward and backward movement, along with 180-degree swiveling capabilities. This technology can also integrate with the center console, enhancing passenger convenience.
Initially set to debut with a Chinese auto manufacturer, Magna is also in discussions with other automakers in North America and Europe, including GM. Magna holds the patent for this versatile seating technology and is actively engaging with various OEMs to bring it to a wider market.
“We own the patent for the long rail and swivel and all those things,” Zhao stated. “We’re working with different OEMs. We’re engaging with other OEMs to pitch our ideas. Some are further advanced than others.”
