Civilian employees at Canadian military bases in Ontario and Quebec have initiated a strike today due to concerns about wages and job security. The strike, organized by the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Union of National Defence Employees, began at 6:30 a.m. Eastern time. The labor action will impact several Canadian Forces bases, including those in Kingston, Montreal, Ottawa, and other locations.
According to the unions, employees within the Non-Public Funds agency are paid significantly less than their counterparts in equivalent positions within the core federal public service. Furthermore, these workers have been without a contract since 2022. Their responsibilities include providing services related to food, recreation, community support, and financial planning to military personnel and veterans.
PSAC national president Chris Aylward stated that members are taking this job action to secure the collective agreement they deserve.
