More residents in Ontario are now eligible for the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP), which offers monthly credits on electricity bills. The provincial government announced an increase in the income eligibility threshold for the program in October 2023, with the changes taking effect on March 1.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the income thresholds have been raised by up to 35%, allowing households of five or more people with a combined income of $71,000 after tax deductions to qualify for the program. Previously, the threshold stood at $52,000.
The OESP provides lower-income households with monthly rebates on their electricity bills, with the amount varying based on factors such as household income and the number of occupants. Eligible residents can receive credits ranging from $35 to $75 per month, with higher rebates available for specific circumstances, such as Indigenous households, those using electric heating, or individuals with certain medical devices.
Existing OESP participants may also be eligible for higher credit amounts and are encouraged to contact the customer service center for further information.
Minister of Children, Community and Social Services Michael Parsa emphasized the government’s commitment to making life more affordable for Ontarians, stating that the investment in the OESP demonstrates their dedication to ensuring that no one in the province is left behind.
With the new income threshold, it is estimated that an additional 100,000 Ontario households could become eligible for the OESP, supplementing the existing 212,000 eligible households identified in 2022.
