Two American men have been charged in Dominica with the murder of Quebec entrepreneur Daniel Langlois and his partner, Dominique Marchand. Jonathan Scott Lehrer, 57, and Robert Snider Jr. faced the charges in Roseau Magistrate’s Court, where they appeared before Chief Magistrate Candia Carrette-George. The charges allege the murder occurred between November 29 and December 2, 2023, in Soufriere, Dominica.
The court proceedings were conducted amidst a solemn gathering outside the courthouse, demonstrating the profound impact Langlois and Marchand had on the local community. The discovery of their charred remains in a vehicle on December 1 has deeply affected the residents of Soufriere and Scotts Head.
Langlois, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, was embroiled in a legal dispute with Lehrer over the use of a public road in Dominica. The conflict escalated to the point of Langlois taking legal action against Lehrer for obstructing access to their property. The High Court had previously ruled in Langlois’ favor, granting unrestricted access to the road for his guests.
The community mourns the loss of Langlois and Marchand, known for their philanthropic efforts through the Daniel Langlois Foundation and their engagement in sustainable development. Langlois, notable for founding Softimage, a software firm used in blockbuster films, was awarded posthumously for his contributions.
The case, which has attracted international attention, is being led by Dominica’s Director of Public Prosecution, Sherma Dalrymple. The Canadian High Commissioner has been engaged, and Canadian authorities have been requested to assist in the investigation. The next court appearance for Lehrer and Snider is scheduled for March 15, 2024, for a Preliminary Inquiry.
